Following Hurricane Iniki's devastation of Kauai in 1992, Medicine International (MI) provided several volunteers to assist in providing primary health care to the western half of the island. Approximately one-quarter of the resident physicians left the island and failed to return following the tropical storm. Recruitment was hampered by expected delays in reconstruction and the rigors of a rural practice.
Medicine International physicians provided comprehensive primary care for the island's 20,000 inhabitants. These services included sports medicine, geriatric medicine, pediatrics, hospital inpatient care, orthopedics, emergency medicine and hyperbaric medicine. Dr. Mouri led the first group and would later return for subsequent rotations. Everyone became infected with the "aloha spirit" as the people of the Garden Island of Hawaii worked together to rebuild their island home.
