Earthquake, Izmet, Turkey
August-September 1999
Medicine International (MI) organized disaster response to Turkey
for the Earthquake that took 20,000 lives and left 250,000 homeless. MI was the only U.S. nongovernmental agency supplying direct relief to this displaced population. We collaborated with Relief International (RI) who supported us with financial and material goods.
Dr. Mark Stinson led a medical disaster relief team that conducted an assessment of the damaged areas, determined the health needs, and quickly set up four mobile health clinics in the Izmit area of central Turkey
We developed 3 mobile clinics and 2 fixed clinics in the area of devastation.
MI was on the ground in 5 days after the quake and remained in place 4 weeks until local resources were mobilized. By the second week MI had more than 20 health care professionals working. Key physicians were Vindi Singh, Mamiko Kawai, Michael Mouri, Herb Sigmond, and Mark Stinson.
